Knox's clerical opponents in Scotland condemned him in his absence and burned him in effigy. Knox's response was to go on the offensive. What a mighty combatant he was! 

Knox goes as far to call on the civil magistrates to put to death idolaters. I would not go that far, or suggest that this were appropriate in our own times, but Knox lived in different times, and Truth was being rediscovered and attempts wsere being made to find a civil context for the Gospel.

Either way, he gave his opponents a ferocious battle.
